3 Levels of Proofing

A frequent discussion that comes up at work is in regards to the darker side of the user experience, the potential ways in which someone could abuse or misuse the equipment. Obviously, it starts from a place of concern, people inadvertently hurting themselves or others because of a design flaw. Invariably, however, we reach a point in the preemptive troubleshooting workflow whereupon someone has to speak up and say, "If someone's that incompetent, they shouldn't be touching our equipment." or "If someone's that much of a jerk, they shouldn't be let in the door each morning."
